A lack of confidence is typically the reason why golfers get "the yips" while putting. This first putting drill can be done at the golf course, home or at the office. We will start without a golf ball. Begin by simply making some putting strokes. Lighten your putting grip pressure until you can feel the weight of the putter head back and through. On each stroke, hold your finish position for a count of three seconds. If at the course, make some strokes with your eyes closed with no target. This will allow you to feel your putting stroke.

Overhaul

As you have practiced for X amount of years with the putting grip you have, it just may be the time to overhaul your putting grip. Since your brain is currently programmed to "yip" using your current putting grip, change your putting grip. These days there are no rules on putting grips. You can go from the over-lap to the ten-finger to the claw grip. By radically changing your putting grip, your brain will need to reprogram all of its circuits and will start with a clean slate.

Get a pre-shot routine

Routines are used in other sports so the players can relax themselves. Batters have routines as they step into the batter box, basketball players have routines at the free throw line to relax themselves. Develop a pre-shot routine the next time you are on the putting green.

Your pre-shot routine can begin with something as easy as lifting your right thumb off of the putter grip and then place the thumb back on the grip. Your pre-shot routine should also include the number of times you look at the putting cup. On paper, your routine may look like this: thumb up, thumb down, look at hole, look at ball, putt. As you use this routine, you will gain a rhythm. This rhythm will flow over into your putting stroke.

Go with your gut

Sergio Garcia has made the change and many others have beaten the yips with using a belly putter. A belly putter will create a true pendulum putting stroke by eliminating the small muscles in your hands from the motion. This lack of hand motion will create consistency for your putting stroke. To use a belly putter, anchor the putter to a point on your midsection or "belly." Take your set-up and make your regular putting stroke as you would with a .standard. length putter. When you finish your stroke, hold your finish until you can count slowly to three.

Now you can go to the putting green and putt your way to lower scores. See you on the practice putting green.

You have heard it many times. The quickest way to lower your score is to improve your putting. To play golf at a high level, the game is about making birdies. Being blunt, the better players rarely three putt. This means that they are making putts and are confident putter under pressure. The better players work at it and it will take some practice time to work with your stroke too. The three drills below are great practice and they will teach you not to move or peek at your putt. These challenges get worse as the heat is turned up and the pressure increases on your putting stroke. You should also work on creating a repeating pre-shot routine so when a big putt needs to be holed, the focus is on holing the putt. Use these drills below. You will see an improvement in your putting and more importantly your pressure putting.

KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL -

You should hold your head still to keep the putter on path throughout the stroke and there are many ways to do this. If you travel, you can practice this at home or in a hotel room. Take your putting stance. Make sure the top of your head is touching the wall and as you take your stroke you should not be able to feel your head move off of the wall. If you do you have too much motion in your putting stroke your head will stay on the wall. Another way to do it is to incorporate a friend. While you swing your putter back and through, have your friend place his/her hand on top of your head to hold your head still. This also provides instant feedback to you. If you are by yourself, take a putting stroke and after the ball is gone, look at the spot where the ball was and slowly count to three and listen for the ball to fall into the putting cup. Although counting to three will seem like an eternity, this is the key to become a good putter under pressure.

KEEP YOUR EYES CLOSED -

After you line up a short two to three foot putt. Simply, close your eyes. Closing your eyes will encourage you to really feel the movement of your arms and you will find that the slower your arms move, the more consistent you will putt. You will also become much better at your distance control.

KEEP A STABLE BASE -

This drill will help you keep your lower body in place during the putting stroke. Take your putting stance. Then wedge a rubber ball between your knees. You can use a cheap kids ball or a volleyball. You will need to squeeze the ball slightly to create a solid foundation and not to let the ball drop from between your knees. Eventually, you will develop the feeling of stability. Keeping a stable base is a fundamental of a consistent putting stroke.

Learning How To Be a Better Putter can be difficult when you don't know how to. There are three keys that tell you how to be a better putter. It is best to keep the same technique when you put, if you keep changing the way the put, you can confuse yourself on what you're doing.

The distance and feel is what you would want to focus on more than the stroke and line. When you focus on the distance you know how far you need to put, and if you get the feel of the club you will find it easier to put. Another downfall for a new putter is sometimes they don't have confidence in what they are doing. Confidence helps you focus better and be positive on where and how far you're putting.

A few other ideas that may help you out are reading the green. The space between you ball and cup or goal, can help you out if you know what to do. Some tips on knowing where your ball will go is taking your time. Don't feel bad when the pro's don't take as long, they know what they are doing. Getting your eye level with the ball may help you see where you need to hit the ball in order for it to go where you need it to go.

Take into note if the grass is wet or dry, when wet, your ball can actually go 9 to 13 inches further than it would on dry. How the grass is cut can even effect where your golf ball goes. Believe it or not the grass can be cut unevenly so be sure you check when you line your shot up. These basic tips can get you started on to being a pro.

Getting the right golf putter is perhaps the most important decision that you can make regarding the clubs in your bag. Although lots of inexperienced golfers spend inordinate amounts of time practicing with their driver for long-distance shots, the facts prove that you can improve your game and lower your score much quicker by putting most of your practice emphasis on putting instead.

In fact, even many pros who have exceptionally consistent swings and are outstanding in every other part of their game, often have trouble with putting, sometimes even losing tournaments due to their putting woes. So if you are a newer or less experienced golfer be sure to pay attention to your putting game, and get a good putter that you can feel comfortable with.

Getting just the right putter for you can be a bit of a challenge though since there are so many types and styles of putters available today. In fact, at times it can even get a little overwhelming when you see all the different kinds of putters that are in use. How do you choose from among them all? How do you know which one is best for you?

Those are all very good questions, and the truth is that there is no standard answer that can be provided. Finding the perfect putter for your individual game is something that only you can do by trial and error. It may require using several different kinds of putters over a long period of time before you can decide on which one works best for you. But don't just use a certain putter because someone else uses it, or you were told that it was the best one to use. Be sure to experiment on your own instead.

With all of that said, there are some basic things that you need to know about putters to be able to make the best choice. The first has to do with the kind of material that is used for the putter head. Since putting has more to do with feel than perhaps any other type of golf shot, the material that is used for the putter head will be very important. The confusing part is that putters are often made from all sorts of materials including stainless steel, aluminum, brass, and much more. So which is best for you?

Again, this is something that only you can decide by experimenting with different types of putters yourself. Many golf pro shops and golf equipment retail stores carry a wide variety of putters that you can try out in the store. It's not a bad idea to take advantage of this opportunity to get familiar with the different types and styles of putters that are available.

Another consideration when selecting a putter is the putter head shape. Generally speaking, most putter head shapes fall into two basic categories, either blade or mallet. You'll see golfers of all different kinds of skill levels using putters with either head shape. A blade putter sort of looks like a small hockey stick, and they can come in all kinds of designs including the solid flat blade and also cavity-back designs to help keep the putter head straight through impact.

The second putter head shape to consider is the mallet putter. These are easy to recognize because they usually have a head that is larger and more round. The weight is often distributed throughout the putter to help provide a more consistent putting stroke.

As you can see, there are plenty of choices to be made when selecting a golf putter. Hopefully this information will help you understand more about the choices that you have when choosing a putter, but only you can make the final decision by using it yourself.

he hardest part about golf swing mechanics is learning to finesse the golf ball around the greens. This is the least amount of time spent in practicing the chipping, pitching, putting and sand play before playing a round of golf.

For most amateurs we don't allow for enough time to practice before hitting the golf links. As soon as we get to the golf course we jump out of our cars, and go directly into the pro shop to take care of business first. Then we go get our golf clubs and shoes, and maybe get a few quick practice putts in, along with swinging the driver, an expect to be all warmed up.

What happens next, most of the time it becomes a rocky picture horror show. With our expectations now reduced down to trying how to figure out what to do next in order to survive. For the majority of amateurs or weekend golfers this happens a lot for the first few holes before we're adequately warmed up.

The only way to combat high scores is being able to have an adequate short game to make up for the mistakes being made from tee to green. Most of the amateurs I play with hit the ball well enough from tee to green, but when they get within 50 yards of the green they seem to struggle. They'll tell me, "I don't have time to practice these shots, I'm not a pro, and they do have all the time in the world to stand and work on these shots, so they do develop the consistency in their feel."

The goal when chipping or pitching in golf is to get the ball to travel the least amount of distance in the air and have it roll along the green. The problem with most golfers they'll anticipate their chip shots, and will have the habit of looking up too soon to see where the ball is going.

One major problem with this is that golfers will forget about their golf swing mechanics. What typically ends up happening as a result is that by looking up, the leading hand wrist bends, causing the golfers hands to flick through the chip shot. The end result is that the club head is picked up too steeply, and a blade type shot occurs which sends the ball on more of a line drive trajectory.

The reason is that the wrists bend or break before contact is made with the golf ball or ground in an attempt to delicately place the ball onto the green. The solution is to make sure your wrists don't break, especially the leading wrist, and that your follow through continues just like a normal golf shot.

Chipping in golf is supposed to softly carry the ball to your target, as opposed to driving or iron-play which is most often accompanied by full swings. Chips are supposed to be approached with finesse to produce loft and the finishing results by rolling the ball along the green once it does make contact. Golfers will often try to slow down their swing, and will end up instead making physical mistakes which will have a negative impact on the outcome of their chip shots. Instead try to keep your leading wrist straight when chipping. This will ensure that you keep the same basic swing as your normal golf swing, but it's toned down a bit to produce a softer feel golf shot.

Once you've mastered the basics in playing around the greens, you'll notice that your golf scores will drop dramatically for every golf round your playing. From within 50 yards, you'll be playing 60% of your golf shots. 50% around the greens. That's why practicing your short game is even more important than going to a driving range, and pounding golf balls after balls. The following are a few golf tips that can help you to improve your green play.

1. Most beginners will aim a foot or two before the hole and then get upset when they hit a perfectly struck ball past the hole, and off the back end of the green. Yes you've hit a great shot, but it didn't account for how much the ball would roll once it did hit the green. Very rarely do you ever have a straight level path to the hole. Which means that slopes and undulations on the greens will affect the roll of the ball. The quicker the ball is rolling and conforming to those slopes and undulations, the better the chances you'll have of sinking more chip shots. The goal should be to hit the green about half way between the edge of the front of the green and the hole. You could even try to hit 1/3 of the way in from the front of the green. Your aim will depend upon the golf club you choose.

2. When using a pitching wedge, the ball will travel in the air about 60%-65% of the distance to the hole and roll 35%-40%.( The reason is obvious since a pitching wedge has a higher degrees in loft.) When using a 7 or 8-iron to chip, expect the ball to travel about 40% in the air and to roll at least 60%. (These clubs have a steeper face and so will set the ball on more of a line drive path.) Going even lower, a 5 or 6-iron will travel about 20% in the air and roll at least 80%. These clubs require more practicing, because unlike the other golf clubs, there is no first bouncing and then rolling. You should see a line drive that hits the fairway 10-20 yards before the green, and then starts rolling at the edge of the green. A golf club I prefer using when just off the green by 10 to 20 yards, with flat ground and no trouble in front, is the Texas wedge. Your putter is the easiest club to control when chipping, and you do feel that you have better than a 50% chance of putting the golf ball in the hole or close to it for a one putt.

3. When addressing the chip shot the majority of your weight needs to be on your front foot. This is important to help you not only too keep your body steady during the golf swing, but to help you impart the downward blow that is important in creating the backspin you want on any chip shot. When descending make sure that your wrists are slightly cocked. This is important as you need to cock the wrist to help deliver a slightly downward blow through the shot. Keep in mind during your back swing that your weight doesn't shift to the back foot at any time, there should be no movement with the lower body. You must keep your weight on the front foot even at the top of your back swing, and keep your body still. This will help eliminate any blading or thinning of the chip shots.

4. It is important that the pace of the golf swing be consistent throughout. It's no good swinging slowly through one shot and quickly going through the next one. You'll get very inconsistent results. Try to imagine a pendulum and the way it moves backwards and forward at the same pace. Try to feel this in all of your chip shots. Then it's important to finish with a good follow through. Make sure that the follow through is directly at the target and not around your body. Don't stop your follow through on this shot or you will constantly come up short, or looking up to see where your golf ball is ending up on the green. This will cause you to chili dip, or blade across the green.

5. For most golfers overconfidence and nervousness does play a major factor in the psyche of a players game. After hitting a well-placed golf shot most average golfers will become overconfident and cocky in a way that harms their performance for their next golf shot. When it comes to nervousness golfers tend to value making birdie putts more than they value shooting par. That is why most golfers become very nervous and choke when there is an opportunity around the greens to get up and down for a chance at birdie. The game of golf is based upon performance, persistency and consistency with regards to your golf swing mechanics. In essence it's the golf mindset that dictates how a golfer will respond to any given moment on the golf course. With just a little practice to establish your distances and pace, you will find playing these chip shots becomes a lot more fun. You'll also get a lot of comments from your playing partners like, "Where did you learn to chip and putt all of a sudden?"

To play golf at a high level, the game is about making birdies and not three putting. This simply means you have to make putts. To become a confident putter under pressure, it will take some practice time to work with your stroke.

The three drills below are great practice. They will teach you not to move or peek at your putt. These get worse as the heat is turned up on your putting stroke. In addition, you should also work on creating a repeating routine so when a big putt needs to be holed, the focus is on holing the putt. Use these drills and you will see an improvement in your putting and more importantly your pressure putting.

1. KEEP YOUR HEAD STILL

You should hold your head still to keep the putter on path throughout the stroke. There are many ways to do this. You can practice this at home or in a hotel room if your travel. Take your putting stance with your head touching the wall.

As you take your stroke you should not be able to feel your head move off of the wall. If you do you have too much motion in your putting stroke. You also can incorporate a friend. While you swing your putter back and through freely have your friend hold your head still. This also provides instant feedback. After the ball is gone, look at the spot where the ball was and slowly count to three and listen for the ball to fall into the putting cup. Although counting to three will seem like an eternity, this is key to become a good putter under pressure.

2. EYES CLOSED

After you line up a short two to three foot putt, simply close your eyes. Closing your eyes will encourage you to really feel the movement of your arms. You will find that the slower your arms move, the more consistent you will putt. In addition, you will become much better at your distance control .

3. STABLE BASE

This drill will help you keep your lower body in place during the putting stroke. First, take your putting stance and then wedge a rubber ball between your knees. You will need to squeeze the ball slightly to create a solid foundation and no tto let the ball drop. You will develop the feeling of stability which is a fundamental of a consistent stroke by rolling putts this way.

You have read the all the latest books by Stan Utley, Dave Pelz, Fred Shoemaker, etc on different putting theories in an attempt to improve your putting stroke. You have been working and working on your putting motion or stroke and you think you have improved. How do you know for sure? You are just looking for a way to challenge yourself in your practice sessions to lower your scores. Here are some ideas:

Take Notes - Keep track of your practice sessions by using The Ultimate Golf Journal or your own notebook. It is also important to keep track of your putting statistics to find out where you need the most practice. To improve your putting you must keep track of the results from your rounds of golf and to improve even faster, keep the statistics from your putting practice sessions as well.

Take the hole away - Stroke multiple putts to the fringe. With the goal being, to stop the ball where the putting green means the green's collar. Again, it is very important that you hold your finish for three seconds. When a player has trouble with their lag putting, it is typically due to the putter re-coiling at the end of the putting motion. Stroke putts from different distances to improve your lag putts. This putting drill works on the speed of your putts.

Keep track of your misses. If you are missing the putting cup more to one side or another, the face of your putter is either opened or closed at impact. You can fix this by putting balls from just two feet from the hole on the practice putting green. In addition, hold your finish for three seconds. The good news is you really have to hit a poor putt to miss from this distance and more importantly you will bee able to see the line of the putt you hit. If your putting line does not improve, look into purchasing a laser pointer that will easily attach to your putter. Most are inexpensive and will give you instant positive feedback.

Compete and play game against a friend. There is no end to what could happen with this idea. My friends and I like playing the putting game named pullback. Here is how you play - Pick the amount of holes you are going to play prior to starting. In this version, we will play nine holes. Decide who will go first. This person will pick a hole and stroke a putt at the determined target. If made, it is one stroke. If it is not made, you must pull it further away from the hole and putt again until the ball is holed. You can bet a coke for overall score or a dollar a stroke, whatever makes it fun and competitive.

Use this article along with the techniques that you have gained from your reading of Stan Utley, Dave Pelz, Fred Shoemaker, etc. to improve your putting motion and stroke. Then get ready to watch your scores get better and better.

After hitting the ball as close to the hole as possible, it is just a matter of putting so you can move on to the next one. While this may sound easy given the short distance, there are still some who have a hard time. To help you out, here are 4 golf swing drills you can try.

The first is the one handed drill. You do this by practice putting ten balls using only your training hand. This drill lets you focus on the palm of your hand as it moves towards the cup.

Next, practice putting using your target hand. The emphasis here is for you to concentrate on your back hand moving towards the cup.

When you do this drill using either hand, be conscious of the toe of your putter in the follow through. Should this turn away from the cup or point toward it, this means you are turning your hand. So you know you are doing it right, the face of the putter should be square to the cup.

Another drill is to practice putting with one eye. Some golfers do this because it stops them from lifting their head prematurely. If you have played this game often, you can even try putting with your eyes closed.

But won't closing your eyes make it harder for you to see where the ball is going? Yes but research has shown that when you try to putt with your eyes open, there is interference with the brain/muscle control system. By closing your eyes, you are relying more on your hands to guide the ball into the hole. And how will you know if the ball goes in? By simply using your sense of hearing.

To do this, you have to practice first putting first with your eyes open at a range of 10 to 50 feet from the hole. After putting these balls with your eyes open, do the same thing this time with your eyes closed. If the ball goes in the hole, you know that sink the ball with your eyes closed.

Another eyes closed technique involves dropping some balls to the ground and just putting them. The objective here is simply to let you feel how the stroke flows back and forth. Do the same thing also with your eyes open. Now that you know the difference, try to incorporate that when you are putting the balls into the hole.

The last golf swing drill is called the alignment drill. To do this, you lay two clubs on the green about six inches apart and make sure that they are parallel to each other. Now putt the ball to see if your stroke is aligned at impact and steady on the back and forward stroke. Do this several times and if you get tired, take a break and rest for a while before resuming the drill.

Practicing some golf swing putting drills like those mentioned will surely help you improve on your game. Who knows? You might even win when you are playing 18 holes with friends. If you can do that at short distances, the only thing to practice on now is your long game because this is just as important as the short game.

The putter has a lot of worth to it than any other club. It would then build the putting grip the most important. Putting may be a very necessary part in personal area of a golfers game plan. Golfers have their own manner of going concerning putting because of its personalized nature.

Putting

It has been said that the elements are the most particular parts of a golfers game. These particular shots are believed to be the money shots (together with chipping) and they can verify whether or not a golfer can win or lose the hole. A ton of self management is required for putting well. Many professionals believe that your means to become a good golfer is to continuously apply especially when it comes to putting.

The Grip

The reverse overlap putting grip is the foremost common of all the grips. What you would do is grasp the club with your right hand creating sure that your thumb is on the shaft and your fingers are wrapped around. Next take your left hand put it above your right hand with your left thumb in the crevice of your right hands and then put your left hands index finger over prime of your right hands fingers. This grip removes a heap of the unuseful shift that golfers typically show. Generally golfers who have bother putting haven't transitionedl from different grips to the putting grip. Professional golfers say you wish to possess a putting grip and a foothold for your alternative clubs, however don't use the same grip for everything. It is rarely a sensible plan to over grip your club.

The Feel and Touch

Putting is an individual side to the sport of golf. When putting an individual should analyze the shot before hand and recognize how much bit to place on the ball. Putting is one thing that needs a nice deal of dedication and patience in order to create progress.

The short game takes up more than half of the shots during a spherical of golf, hence the importance of being sensible at it. More emphasis is put on shorter shots than any alternative shots in the game of golf. This could be a very tough facet to master, being how there are various variables to consider such as: slope of hills, the conditions outside i.e. wet dry, wind, etc. and putting needs the exact quantity of acceleration, speed, and follow-through to be perfected.

Developing a consistent putting stroke shouldn't be as hard as some would have it. But with the human psyche being what it is, it's not surprising that too many golfers, even good ones, go through life not quite sure what they're doing on the green.

There are probably as many ideas about what it takes to improve putting as there are instructors. But some very basic factors should be allowed to come into play, no matter your size, manner or equipment. By the way, changing putters seldom develops the kind of repeating success you desire. Positive thinking is a far more reliable tool.

Check your grip on the putter. Make sure your hands are close together. Independent movement from either or both hands makes a reliable putting stroke virtually impossible. If your normal grip refuses to sink more putts, then try what many touring professionals do. Use a reverse overlap grip, or try a cross-handed grip if your wrists break down while stroking the ball. Also, don't strangle the putter—a light touch produces better feel.

Don't let the putter decelerate through the stroke. It has to keep moving or you cannot expect to keep the ball on line. Follow through farther than your backstroke and see fewer putts heading dead left. A good practice method to solve this problem is to place a ball behind the ball you intend to hole. Stop moving the backswing as soon as the extra ball is touched, and make sure from that position that the putted ball reaches the hole.

Keeping your hands ahead of the ball is fundamentally important for a good putting stroke. Hands behind the ball add loft to the ball, and wrists break down easily. Hands in front, or at least even with the ball, produce better rolling putts.

Good putting isn't magic. It requires attention to detail and the ability to self-analyze your mistakes. Keep it simple, focus and let your buddies pick up the bar bill after the round.
